When installing a stretch ceiling, or more precisely – when heating a PVC linen with a heat gun, a noticeable chemical smell appears in the room.
Is it dangerous?
To begin with, if the film is of high quality, then the smell disappears quickly, in 3-5 days, and has no negative effect on well-being.
But often, in an effort to save money, people turn to clandestine artisan brigades that use cheap but poor-quality fake film for stretch ceilings. In this case, it may happen that the material can contain substances such as phenol or toluene, which weather out much longer – 1-2 weeks.
The main sign of the presence of these substances in the PVC film is an unpleasant sweetish smell.
The smell of cheap low-quality PVC films (containing the same phenol) can adversely affect your well-being namely: dizziness, weakness, headaches, in severe cases, nausea and fainting may occur.
In a room with high ceilings, the smell is less audible. But stronger is felt in the premises with moist air (bathrooms, swimming pools).
If the sweet chemical odor characteristic of a phenol-containing film does not erode more than 1.5-2 weeks, it is better to replace such a film with a better one.
